Heliozel is the brainwave and creation of HopSol, a solar power company which was established in 2010 in Switzerland with branches in Namibia, South Africa and Brazil. HopSol is responsible for not only on-grid residential solar systems, but also systems for big shopping centres, off-grid solar solutions and even Megawatt solar parks.
HopSol realised that there was an urgent need for people in lower income brackets with limited budgets, who live in rural areas and do not have access to electricity. They are desperate for a price-worthy, easy solar solution. For years, HopSol did extensive research to see what could be done. The company ventured to all the corners of the country where most peoples’ only access to light was through candles or paraffin lamps. Expensive batteries were used to power small radios and cell phone charging was a lengthy, costly process. HopSol sat with farm dwellers and hut owners and spoke to them, asked them questions and after all these investigations HopSol knew what had to be done.
Through face-to-face, on the ground market research, HopSol came to realise that not having power is expensive and a health risk. Candles and paraffin lamps have caused countless fires in informal dwellings, not to mention lung diseases and eye conditions. Illegal electricity cables have cost many lives. Buying batteries, candles, paraffin and paying for phone charging for one year would accumulate to a significantly higher cost than the purchase of a Heliozel DC10. And so, through much contemplation, deliberation, calculations, technical experimentation and the search for the ideal solution Heliozel was born. The first solar set of this range was the Heliozel DC10, which not only provides lights and cell phone charging, but also a radio with MP3 player (and more!). HopSol had learned that, although lights and a cell phone were essential, music was part of the list of priorities.
Soon, the range grew and so the AC300, TV and DC6 became part of the Heliozel family.
But this wasn’t enough. Because of the imminent power crisis in so many African countries, more needs evolved. In Zimbabwe, for example, millions of people deal with 12 hours of load shedding a day. South Africans also understand this struggle and many more nations have been faced with power issues which are out of the population’s control.
There was a greater need – for more power and bigger systems, which led to the introduction of the Heliozel Power Boxes. These all-in-one solar systems, with built-in batteries and highly efficient solar panels have made their way to farms, businesses and households in off-grid areas as well as provided homes in the middle of regular power cuts with electricity while the rest of the neighbourhood stood in darkness.
To date, thousands of our orange solar boxes have made their way to modest shacks, tented camps, suburban homes, rural schools and churches, field trips, farms and more. NGOs and SMMEs use Heliozel to empower their people and provide a steady income. HopSol’s wish and aim is that every home without the privilege of electricity should be equipped with one a Heliozel solar system – or any home which wants to get away from the online grid or free themselves from the burdens of load shedding.
With a great team of highly motivated individuals who are passionate about this task, HopSol is confident that Heliozel has the ability to change lives and light the way. There is nothing quite like falling asleep, knowing that somewhere out there, a family can read at night and listen to music thanks to Heliozel.
